Driving shoes are shaped around the movement of the foot between pedals. Co-created with Poggy, EPT Japan’s Creative Director, Checkmate Driver turns that reference into a low suede sneaker with curved TPU panels, extended lacing, and a heel pull tab. A pebble-lug rubber outsole wraps the toe and rounded heel for grip, giving the familiar driving shape a more rugged character.
why we like it
why we like it
The Checkmate Driver has a strange balance in the best way: part driving shoe, part trail reference, part design object. The suede upper keeps it soft, the TPU panels add structure, and the rounded heel gives the shoe its driving-inspired shape. It feels low and precise, but the lugged sole keeps it grounded.We’re excited by how unexpected it feels. From above, it has the neat, close shape of a driving shoe. From the side, the pebble sole takes over, wrapping the toe and heel with texture and grip. That contrast gives Checkmate Driver a personality of its own.
